Sbot Gets Bing Search and adds Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger Support

About a few month back, we had told you about an amazing bot called as Sbot, through which you could search the entire web via IM.

Well now, the Sbot has been recently updated. It has incorporated Bing search and added support for Yahoo! Messenger and Live Messenger as well.

To perform Bing Search on IM, send “bSearchQuery” and in a short while, you will get the top 10 Bing search results at that time.

Using Sbot on Yahoo! Messenger/ MSN Live Messenger is very similar to using it on Gtalk, you just have to add searchbot@ymail.com and searchbot@live.com respectively as your buddies to use Sbot.

Log In with your Facebook Username Now

Remember a few months back , the Facebook username you had rushed to get in June?

From Today, you can use that username rather than the email address to log in to Facebook.com.

This new feature, helps you to skip typing those extra characters that comprised your email address and instead use your shorter username to access your Facebook account.

I feel this move by Facebook makes complete sense considering the fact that people remember their usernames better than their email addresses. What do you think? Do Pass on your comments.

If you have not registered your username as yet, you can just head over to facebook.com/username to register your username and then start using it for accessing your facebook account.

How to Replace Google’s Logo with your Favourite Doodle on Google’s Search Page

If you love Google’s Doodles which is used by Google to commemorate important events and holidays, a good news news for you. Tiffany Lane, A Google employee, has created a Greasemonkey script through which you can now replace Standard Google’s logo in the homepage with your favorite doodle from this list.

Currently, however the script will override your favorite doodle on holidays or any days with a special doodle by default and after that holiday is over, your favorite doodle will be back. But you can change the script such that your favorite doodle is always shown.

This script is compatible with only the Greasemonkey extension installed version of Firefox.

Posterous Adds Custom Themes

After a long wait, Posterous Team has finally released theming options for Posterous. Now you can change the look and feel of your Posterous blog with the variety of inbuilt themes available or create your own theme for your posterous site.

There are currently 5 inbuilt themes namely:

Clean Sheet
Simple Reader
Ginza
Paramaibo
Dakhar

Or You can create your own custom blog header for your posterous site and then just upload it to see it at the top of every page on your blog.

You can also use the color picker to change the Color of text, Date, link or even the site Background.

Or you can create your own posterous theme and use it.

Also Posterous Themes are Tumblr-compatible. So if you have an awesome Tumblr theme or you have created your own theme for Tumblr, then you can use it for Posterous as well.

So How to Theme your Posterous Site?

To theme your posterous site, just head over to “Manage” section on your Posterous site, click “Edit Settings” and then click on “Theme and Customize My Site” to add your own theme or use any one of the inbuilt themes.

BSNL eases usage charges on Convenience 250 Plan

BSNL, one of the leading Internet Service Provider in India, has reduced the usage charges for broadband users using the plan Convenience 250. The plan is detailed as below:

Bandwidth: 256 Kbps to up to 2 Mbps

Usage Charges: Rs.250 p.m. or Rs. 2500 p.a.

Free Usage: 1 GB with no night unlimited.

Additional charge after Free Usage: It is 0.50 rupees per MB now instead of 0.90 Rupees per MB before.

And as before, modem charges & landline charges are extra.

Gmail finally comes out of Beta

After 5 long years since its launch, Gmail has finally come out of Beta and it is about time as well. With a lot of amazing features and recently launched Google Labs applications, Google was being questioned as to why Gmail and many of its other products are still in beta. Therefore, Google has now decided to remove the “Beta” tag from Gmail.

Along with Gmail, the other services which are out of Beta are Google Calendar, Google Docs and Google Talk.

Quoting from an article on the Official Google Blog,

“Beta” will be removed from the product logos today, but we’ll continue to innovate and improve upon the applications whether or not there’s a small “beta” beneath the logo.

The website along with all its customer data has now been bought out by Systemax for around $14 Million Dollars. And according to the new CEO, the new website will feature lower prices, faster shipping and a wider selection of products along with a 24/7 customer service.

Wolfram Alpha – A Highly Impressive Scientific Computation Engine

Finally, after a long wait, the much hyped “Wolfram Alpha” went live a few days back.

And I must say, I am very impressed with the data and the visualizations this search engine churns out.

Though many people say that it is a Google Killer, I somehow would want to differ on that. This is not like Google which gives you only contextual best results but it is bit more on the advanced side and give you some amazing results for almost any query you throw at it, in a visual format.

For Example,

If you give a date, say June 23, 1988, it churns out the day, the time difference from today (in years, weeks, months, days respectively), its day number in 1988, any notable event that happened that day and even the daylight information, and the phase of the moon.

If you give a city name, say Bangalore, it gives you the city population, location, Current local time, Current Weather there and the approximate elevation from the sea.

If you give any calculation like 12.9567% of 765, it give you back the exact result as 99.119

If you give it any website name, like Techieblues.com, then it gives you the host name, location, daily page views, daily visitors, Webpage information, HTML element hierarchy of the domain.

Now here come the most killer part, just give any complex trigonometric expression, like x^2 sin(x)/(Cos(x) Tan(x^2))”>x^2 sin(x)/(Cos(x) Tan(x^2)), and see the answer in a jiffy. It not only gives you the result but also its graphs, inequality plots, alternate forms, series expansion and also its derivatives. Can Google Do that?

At times though, due to the sudden rush of traffic and also the site is pretty much in Alpha state, it goes down once in while.

Though Wolfram Alpha might not be much useful for the normal internet user, this is a definite treasure for all the researchers, bloggers, students etc.
